Nikiti
Nikiti is a small town and the capital of the Municipality of Sithonia. It is located 90km away from Thessaloniki. Its residents are mostly active in the tourism industry, the production of olive oil and beekeeping. Many amazing beaches are in close proximity. Nikiti also has several public services.
History
The tomb of a Roman colonist from Kassandreia was found near Nikiti. The village’s history starts with the establishment of the first settlement in the 14th century. This settlement is mentioned in documents of the Monastery of Xenofon. The sources refer to this location as the land of Neakitos.
Significant paleontological findings have been discovered in the old settlement. The residents of Nikiti participated in the Greek war of independence in 1821. In 1867, the parish church of Agios Nikitas was built. There is also the cemetery church of Koimisis Theotokou and the chapel of Profitis Ilias.
Since the ’50s, Nikiti has been expanding towards the beach.
